Bible Verse: Luke 1:38
“I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.
This verse highlights a significant moment of faithful obedience in Mary’s life. When the angel Gabriel told her that she would conceive and give birth to the Son of God, Mary was confronted with an overwhelming message. Yet, her response was one of complete obedience and humility.
By saying, “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary shows that she knows who she is in the Lord and what her purpose is. She acknowledges that her life belongs to God and is committed to serving Him. This reflects a heart fully devoted to God’s will, no matter the uncertainties that lay ahead.
When Mary says, “May your word to me be fulfilled,” it shows her deep trust in God’s plan. She didn’t ask for all the details or for assurances of comfort and safety. Instead, she placed her faith in God’s goodness and control. Her willingness to accept God’s word, even without fully understanding it, demonstrates remarkable trust and courage.
Mary’s faithful obedience also emphasizes how important it is for believers to submit to God. In a world that often values independence and putting yourself first, Mary’s example challenges us to think about what it really means to submit to God’s will. Her response encourages us to look at our own hearts and ask if we are willing to follow God’s guidance, even when it might disrupt our own plans. Mary’s obedience paved the way for the fulfillment of God’s plan to redeem humanity through Jesus Christ. Her “yes” to God opened the door for the Savior of the world to enter history.
The Lesson: Mary teaches us that our faithful obedience, though it may seem small or insignificant, can have far-reaching impacts in God’s kingdom. In a culture that often values personal freedoms and the control of one’s own body and life, we are challenged us to consider what it means to truly submit to God’s will. Examine your own heart and ask whether you are willing to follow God’s leading, even when it disrupts your plans or expectations. Put your faith in God’s guidance instead of relying solely on your own desires or plans. By seeking God’s will through prayer and Scripture, you can make decisions that align with His purpose, rather than just following what society values. Live with a heart open to helping others and being obedient to God’s call, trusting that His plans are always for your good.
