Refrain from Anger

Verse of the Day: Psalm 37:8

Refrain from anger and turn from wrath; do not fret–it leads only to evil.

In the heat of an argument, it’s easy to let anger and emotions take control, leading to words we later regret. Yet, as believers, we are called to a higher standard. Anger itself is not sinful—God Himself has displayed righteous anger—but what matters is how we respond to it. The Bible reminds us to be “slow to anger” and to act in ways that honor the Lord (James 1:19-20).

Self-control, a Fruit of the Spirit, is a gift we can access through the guidance of the Holy Spirit. When anger arises, instead of allowing it to consume us, we can turn to God in prayer and worship, acknowledging our feelings and asking Him to transform our hearts. Surrendering our emotions to Him, trusting that He will help us respond with grace and wisdom.

Start by confessing your anger to God, asking for His strength to address not only the surface emotions but also the deeper issues behind them. Seek His peace, which surpasses understanding, and allow His Spirit to fill your heart with patience and compassion. Remember, there is no shame in seeking additional help from pastors, counselors, or other resources to grow in emotional and spiritual maturity.

Instead of giving in to anger, let it become an opportunity to worship—pausing to reflect on God’s grace and extending that same grace to others. In doing so, your actions and words can glorify Him and lead to healing and restoration.

“Peace Be Still” by The Belonging Co (featuring Lauren Daigle) is a powerful reminder to trust in God’s peace during storms of anger or emotional turmoil.
