The Syrophoenician Woman: Approaching Jesus with Faith and Persistence

Bible Verse:   Mark 7:26

The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter.

The story of the Syrophoenician woman is found in Mark 7:24-30 and Matthew 15:21-28. She was a Gentile, from the region of Phoenicia, and came to Jesus because her daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit. Despite being from a different cultural and religious background, she approached Jesus with boldness, seeking His help.

At first, Jesus tested her faith by responding that it wasn’t right to take the children’s bread (referring to the Jews) and throw it to the dogs (a term sometimes used for Gentiles at the time). However, instead of being discouraged, the woman persisted, humbly accepting the metaphor and replying, “Even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” Her response demonstrated deep humility and unwavering faith. Impressed by her faith and persistence, Jesus granted her request, healing her daughter instantly.

The Lesson: The Syrophoenician woman teaches us the power of approaching Jesus with faith and persistence. Even though she faced cultural barriers and a challenging response, she didn’t give up. She believed in Jesus’ power and was persistent in her request, and her faith was rewarded.

You can apply this lesson to your daily life by approaching God with unwavering faith, trusting that He knows your needs and can provide for them, even in difficult circumstances. Begin each day with prayer, expressing your trust in His faithfulness and reflecting on His promises. Be persistent in your prayers, continuing to seek His help and guidance even when the answers seem delayed. Trust His perfect timing, knowing that He works all things for good. As you encounter challenges, remain steadfast in your faith, leaning on Him rather than giving in to doubt. Let this lesson inspire you to embrace and encourage others, showing kindness and sharing the hope of faith with people from all walks of life. By living with faith, persistence, and trust in God, you allow His presence to guide and sustain you through every situation.

  1. Thank you so much for this message. In South Africa we experience unknown drought. Usually our rainy season starts in October and it is December already. During this week we receiced 19mm and yestersay evening 42mm. God is just SO SO faithful. The farmers’ maize crops are about an inch high, where compared to other years it already stands about a meter or more in height … BUT GOD. Regards Lindy
